Looking to Japan for Care Answers

As regular readers of this blog know, one of the things that I like to do occasionally is to look at senior care practices in other countries, and think about how the things that they are doing might be helpful for us to consider. Today, I wanted to take a quick look at Japan and one of the things that they are doing in their nursing homes to help improve the lives of elderly individuals that have trouble with mobility.

Japan shares a lot of the same issues that the United States does when it comes to senior care. One of those is the fact that the population of seniors within the country is growing much faster than other parts of the demographic. Just like in the U.S., this has led to an increase of the usage of nursing homes. And like the U.S., Japan is beginning to have trouble finding enough caregivers to help these people.

One way that Japan is compensating for this is through technology. One example is with ultrasonic sensors. When used correctly, these can alert nursing home or assisted living staff that a resident needs to be taken into the restroom. One positive result that has been noticed in Japan is that instances of incontinence have been reduced thanks to this. Thanks to this, the quality of life of seniors that are using this technology has been improved because of a reduced need for clean ups. It also has the potential to help reduce instances of unintended neglect, which is very encouraging as we see a rise in the number of reported cases of senior abuse here in the U.S.

Looking to countries like Japan might be able to help us provide better care here.

This is just one of the many ways that technology is being used to make care better and more effective. Sometimes, we just need to look to what others are doing in order to come up with better ideas ourselves.

Not everyone needs the intensive assistance that a nursing home provides. Although it can be smart to look to other countries to get an idea for how we can improve our own care, we do have a lot of choices available here in the United States. If you’re unsure of what your care choices are, be sure to get in touch with a care professional in your community. And if you don’t know where to start in this respect, your county’s Department of Senior Services. At the very least, they will be able to point you toward the right resources so that you and your loved ones can find the high quality senior care that you deserve.

And, as always, if you are located in the Bay Area, give us a call. We offer a free consultation service to go over what all of your needs might be when it comes to care. That way, we can better assess whether or not we have the ability to best serve your family before anyone commits to anything. There’s no obligation, and hopefully we can help you to find the perfect care for you and your family.
