The Caregiving Crisis in the Workplace

Believe it or not, the potential senior care crisis that could occur might have a huge impact on the business world. According to a study from Harvard Business School, businesses are not doing enough to actually help their employees when it comes to senior care. As far as benefits go, providing care assistance is not required for businesses, and in an effort to reduce costs, most do not offer any sort of help here. Although this does save on money upfront, this study out of Harvard revealed that it may actually be more expensive to go about it this way. Millions of dollars of hidden costs are spent this way, and both companies and the individuals working for them suffer as a result.

This inevitably leads to a higher rate of employee turnover. There are ways to prevent this, but a lot of individuals in management and decision making roles within companies are unaware of how to do this, unfortunately. One of the goals of this study was to help bring a solution into the light.

In this study, about 75 percent of the individuals that were interviewed said that they had provided care to a member of their family, and the vast majority of those said that it had some sort of impact on their work life. Unfortunately, as more and more seniors find themselves in need of assistance, more family members will find themselves in a position where they need to provide that help.

Healthcare is expensive. We know that and employers all over know that. However, by keeping yourself healthy and in work, you can actually cut down on costs, even when you pay out of pocket for an in-home care worker to come and assist your loved one. Studies have shown that this is cheaper than missing work to do it yourself.

Caregiving is expensive, and companies are doing very little to help their employees here.

The sad reality is that a lot of companies do not see that there is any benefit for them to shoulder some of the cost of healthcare and family assistance.
