Combating Cardiovascular Disease with New Tech

Blood pressure is one of the most difficult things for doctors to effectively treat. The biggest hindrance to treating unsafe blood pressure levels isn’t an inability to treat it, but rather a lack of awareness. Unlike other health issues, the impact of high blood pressure isn’t always visible without a medical examination. Luckily, this is something that can be rectified quite easily. Blood pressure tests only take a couple minutes, and they are incredibly cheap to administer. In fact, a lot of public spaces have blood pressure monitor cuffs that are freely available to whoever wants to use them.

One scary fact regarding blood pressure: only half of the people that have been diagnosed with high blood pressure have their symptoms under control. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can lead to heart disease or stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States.

Researchers have recently stated that another way that blood pressure issues can be more efficiently monitored is through wearable technology. These wearable devices measure pulse wave velocity, or how quickly blood moves through the veins. Recent advances in medical knowledge has indicated that this measurement can actually be an accurate measure of blood pressure. Rather than using the traditional cuff that we are all familiar with to measure blood pressure, a small patch connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth or something similar can relay much of the same information. For those that are struggling to manage their symptoms–which is about half of the population with hypertension–this can be a good way to keep tabs on their health and fight a more effective battle for themselves.

Cardiovascular disease is the top cause of premature death in the United States, but new technology is trying to fix that.

This method of monitoring hypertension is still under development. More research is necessary if this is to be rolled out as a mainstream method of helping those with high blood pressure to stay healthy. But, if it does work, it could help many more people avoid the ill effects of cardiovascular disease and help those struggling with this avoid premature mortality.

This is just another example of how technology can be helpful in our lives. These wearable patches are only one of many advances that we have seen recently in the field of technology. Senior care especially has come a long way toward helping to improve the quality of life of seniors that use certain tech items. Between monitoring health conditions, keeping tabs on safety, and making communication better, technology has done a lot to help seniors live better lives.

There’s no good replacement for human contact, however. Even when there are plenty of high quality tech items in place, no amount of these things can replace what it’s like to be in contact with other people. When a loved one needs senior care, no amount of tech is going to be able to replace your presence. Spend time with your older parents and help them out when you are able to. If you notice that they are struggling with their day to day tasks, talking with them about their plans for senior care can be a good way to ensure that they are continuing to get the human contact and care that they need to stay healthy and happy.
