Limited Uses for Statins

Heart conditions and cardiovascular disease in general are the leading cause of death in the United States. More people die from this than any other cause, including elderly individuals. Treatment has come a long way, but the bigger issue when it comes to heart disease is prevention. We know far more now than ever before about how to prevent heart disease, but there is still a very long way to go. Still, treatment continues to grow and become more and more effective.

Perhaps the most commonly used type of medication for those with a cardiovascular disease is the statin class. Statins are most commonly used to treat individuals with high cholesterol. Although they have some side effects, they have been well regarded in terms of doing what they are supposed to do.

Recently, some researchers had suggested that statins could have usage beyond their original purpose. It was purported that statins could be used to treat a whole host of other health conditions, such as cancer, kidney diseases, and even dementia. Although this would have been a huge leap forward in medical research, it has turned out that subsequent findings have discredited the original claim regarding the widespread efficacy of statins.

The most current research looked at hundreds of studies that had been conducted on statins in the past. Although there was some promising data regarding the use of this type of drug in areas beyond the treatment of cholesterol, the information that was gathered was not strong enough to provide for any sort of conclusive finding. The current recommendation is that there should not be any changes in how these medications are prescribed unless future research indicates that the use of statins in other areas is actually beneficial. Unless this changes, researchers state that statins should only be used for the treatment of high cholesterol levels.

Statins may not be as helpful as earlier claims reported.

When a loved one has suffered because of cardiovascular disease, either because of a heart attack, stroke, or another reason, finding a caregiver that is trained in helping with their particular set of needs becomes a high priority. Disabilities can occur or become more pronounced because of cardiovascular disease, and care may become a permanent fixture in a loved one’s life because of this health issue. Knowing what is needed out of care, and how to get that assistance to your loved one, is tough. Companies like ours are here to help you, but not all caregivers are the same or provide the same services. A service that is perfect for one family might not be ideal for another.
