If you knew that after your mom or dad had suffered from a stroke they had not been given a medication that might potentially save their life, how would you feel? If you are like most, you’d be angry or upset. That’s a perfectly reasonable reaction. In fact, it doesn’t matter what the health scare or crisis might be; if doctors had missed out on a chance to improve their health, you and the rest of your family would not be happy about it.
A recent study coming out of Georgia State University has revealed that after patients suffer from an ischemic stroke, many are not receiving a treatment called intravelous alteplase–a medication that has shown it can dissolve clots. This medication has a great track record and has shown that it has the potential to save more lives in comparison to other treatment methods.
This method of treatment has been in use since 1996, and it has shown that it has the potential to save lives and reduce instances of disability during the recovery period after the stroke occurs. However, even though these great benefits are well documented, the drug is not being used with the expected frequency. Unfortunately, some are suffering as a result of this.
Of course, intravelous alteplase is beneficial to some, but not to everyone. We are all individuals, and each case needs to be treated at the individual level. We would expect this from our doctors, but it is worth noting that not all cases are handled with the same level of personal care that is needed. As a result, not everyone has the same access to a positive outcome after a stroke occurs. Hopefully, this study will act as a warning to help those that suffer from a stroke in the future to receive better care immediately following, and long afterwards.
The concept same goes for senior care. It needs to be individualized in order for the best results to occur. If there’s an opportunity for you and the rest of your parent’s care team to take steps to improve health and quality of life, this is an opportunity that you should be taking. The immediate impact might not be as dramatic as treatment after a stroke, but the lasting results can be just as significant. For example, if in-home care will help to make your dad happier and it addresses all of his needs, then this is a better course of action than a care plan that would address his needs, but leave ehim miserable. Taking these little things into account will go a long way toward improving happiness and health in your family, and after time, those little things add up into a very big thing.
Individualized care and attention can be tough to administer. That’s why it is smart to always go with a professional care service. You want a caregiver that knows what to do, and can react appropriately to any situation. A trained, professional care service can accomplish this far better than any other type of care you might consider.
