Memory loss is perhaps the most characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, but it is not enough evidence to be indicative of the presence of the disease. In fact, there are many different kinds of dementia, and memory loss without dementia also can occur as people age.
A new, and extremely easy to administer, test has shown that it can help doctors differentiate between Alzheimer’s and less serious types of memory loss with a good deal of accuracy. That test simply takes a look at whether the person experiencing the early stages of memory loss is aware of the fact that they cannot remember things as well. If they are aware of their memory loss, there’s a strong chance that they do not have Alzheimer’s. If they’re unaware of their memory loss, there’s a stronger chance that they do have Alzheimer’s. It’s certainly not a conclusive test, but it has proven to be much more accurate than other, more expensive tests. At the very least, it can point doctors in the right direction more quickly.
Memory loss of any sort is a big deal. It is frustrating for the person who recognizes that they have it, it’s confusing for the person who doesn’t recognize it, and it is difficult for families to cope with. Having a strong team of doctors, nurses, and caregivers that specialize in those with memory needs can make life better. And that’s true of your mom or dad with memory loss and everyone else in your family. We understand that this is a family affair, and not something that just impacts one person.
That’s why having a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or any other physical or cognitive disability is a challenge. Families find themselves in a situation where they need to either provide care themselves, or find someone to help them do that. Professional care is an option that many people will benefit from, but a good deal of those people don’t ever consider professional care. Another large percentage of people instantly gravitate toward a nursing home. This is a good choice for some, but definitely not for all. Memory care is just as varied as other forms of senior care, and finding the right care for an elderly loved one will help to improve their quality of life significantly.
Families need support along with their loved one that needs senior care. Sure, there might be only one family member that actually requires assistance, but that doesn’t mean that the others in their household and those that love them are not impacted. Whether you act as a family caregiver, or you are looking for a professional in-home care service to fulfill some of the duties that you and your family are currently taking on, there is support out there for you.
