The Flu is Dangerous for Seniors

The flu poses more severe consequences for the elderly than it does for younger folk. Prolonged hospitalizations and even premature deaths have been attributed to the flu. Taking steps to prevent it in your elderly loved ones will be of huge value to your family. Elderly individuals will feel the symptoms much more drastically than younger adults will, and it can have a profound impact on their quality of life for months to come.

A new study shows yet another health risk for those that get the flu. Elderly people who get the flu or experience flu-like symptoms are at a higher risk of suffering from a stroke. The risk of this occurring is at its highest within a month of the onset of the flu. The flu is already dangerous, and this extra element of risk to health makes it even more so. It is far more important than we might think to help prevent this illness from occurring.

This study, which was supported by the American Heart Association, did not find a reason why flu increases the risk of stroke. However, it does stand to reason that taking steps to prevent the flu could potentially help to preserve the health of those who are at risk. Over 3,800 people were examined within this study.

The biggest weakness within this study was that it relied on previously established data. Researchers needed to look at insurance billing data codes to piece together their evidence. The information was obtained in a secondhand manner thanks to this, and there’s a chance that information was lost because of this fact.

The flu is far more dangerous for seniors than we might think.

Everyone should speak with a doctor about getting a flu shot. Almost everyone can benefit from this vaccine. Even those that are not at high risk of getting the flu can help others by doing this. When someone has had their flu shot, they are at a much lower risk of spreading the illness to others. It’s definitely not a guarantee that the flu shot will prevent someone from getting sick or spreading the virus, but it does severely reduce the odds of it happening. Even though it might be a little step, it can go a long way toward improving your health and that of those around you. Your doctor can give you more information on whether the flu shot is right for you and how it can help you.
