The Connection Between Dementia and Frailty

A new study published in the journal The Lancet Neurology states that elderly individuals that are frail are much more susceptible to dementia, and particularly Alzheimer’s disease. This has been hailed as a giant step forward in Alzheimer’s research by those involved in the study.

They also found that even those that did not have Alzheimer’s disease but showed signs of frailty were likely to have brain changes taking place. Because of this, researchers believe that maintaining a health weight and preserving muscle mass and strength can be effective when it comes to preventing dementia. This has been referred to as “frail brain” and could be a good way to help elderly individuals who might be at risk of the disease.

The researchers behind this study concluded that when doctors are evaluating potential dementia patients that they should take frailty into account when doing so. Hopefully, this will help to improve the accuracy of diagnoses for those with Alzheimer’s. Early detection can help those with this disease to live a higher quality of life for a longer period of time. Although there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are still a lot of things that we can do to help them live a happy life for an extended period of time. The sooner the disease is diagnosed, the sooner caregivers and doctors can begin to make arrangements for a higher quality of life.

Either way, it does expand upon the idea that dementia is far more complex than just something to do with the brain. It also could be one of the reasons why exercise has proven to be so effective at preventing dementia in the past. There’s still a lot of research that needs to be done in this regard. Hopefully, this is the first of many steps in the right direction when it comes to helping the people that we love.

A new study indicates that frailty could be an indicator of dementia.

When you have a family member that is frail, weak, or otherwise needs help getting around the house on a daily basis, enlisting the help of a professional caregiver can be a big help to you and the rest of your family. A caregiver can help to take some of the burden off of your shoulders and help you get back to doing the important things that you need to do for your family. Perhaps this is your job, or just providing love and compassion. Sometimes, it can be hard to be cheerful and happy when you are under a lot of stress.

If you’re elderly loved one does have dementia, a caregiver with experience and knowledge in this field will be necessary. People with Alzheimer’s or any other form of dementia have a unique set of needs, and someone with the right skillset is vital if you want your family to receive the best care possible.
