New Research on the Eye Holds Promise

Researchers think that they have made a big leap forward when it comes to treating many of the issues that most heavily impact the elderly population. Things like cataracts, strokes, and cancer are more prevalent in the older population than in the younger population, if only because statistics put the individuals in this population at a greater risk because of time. However, thanks to a better understanding of the structure within the lens of the eye, researchers believe that they can more easily detect and resolve potential health issues.

A group of researchers from Portland State University in Oregon have developed a 3D model of the proteins within the lens of the eye and believe that there is a connection between these proteins and the development of many health issues. Things known as gap junctions can either pass on or block information from going to another source. Based upon this information, they have begun to better understand just what is going on in the brain and in other parts of the body. In other words, simply by looking at the proteins found within the eye, doctors might be able to tell if there is a serious health issue at play within the body. In the future, a simple test might be able to reveal a whole lot of information about someone’s health.

Additionally, researchers think that by blocking or activating gap junctions within the body, health issues can be avoided. There’s still a really long way to go if this is going to be an effective form of treatment, but there is a good deal of optimism that this could be beneficial to people in the future. Only time and more research into this area will give us more information about how this can help.

Researchers are learning more about the eye and how information gained can prevent diseases.

The eye is the organ that is most closely connected to the brain. The ocular nerve directly connects the eye and the brain, and a lot of information can be gained about the brain simply by studying the eye. This has been a well established fact for quite some time, but new insight into the relationship between the eye and the brain is now available thanks to this research. For seniors that are prone to greater health issues and might not come into the doctor’s office as often as they should, this test could be a valuable way to get a quick and accurate assessment of someone’s state of health.

For those of us that have an elderly loved one with health problems or a disability, getting them the care that they need can be an overwhelming task. This is why senior care exists. In-home care can be a great alternative to other types of care, depending on the physical and emotional needs that your loved one has. If you have an older relative who might be needing help getting through the day because of advanced age, a disability, or any other reason, in-home care can be a great way to help your family stay safe and have some companionship at the same time.
