Another Danger that Comes With Stress

A recent study indicated that chronic stress can lead to loss of vision. When we think about the people in our lives that are under the most stress, vision loss would likely only add to their burden. This is especially true of elderly individuals that are already suffering from some sort of health issue or disability. Dealing with this is not easy and brings a lot of stress along with it. Adding to that would only make their lives more difficult.

When your body is under chronic stress, there are elevated cortisol hormone levels, which, amongst other things, raises the pressure in your eyes. This is one of the hallmark symptoms of glaucoma. Some researchers have posited that controlling stress levels can help to prevent glaucoma, and thus prevent vision issues. And if there are already eye problems in place, controlling stress levels has the potential to help manage the health issues that are in place.

This is one of the many reasons why using a professional caregiver can be such a blessing to families. Not only does it provide you with a caregiver that knows how to properly administer care to an elderly individual, it takes some of the workload off of you. It’s not a perfect replacement, but it is far better than having a stressed out loved one giving less than their best.

Stress isn’t just bad for the elderly loved ones in our lives. It can be bad for us, too. Being a family caregiver can be one of the most stressful experiences that we will have in our lifetimes. Acting as a caregiver is certainly a noble thing, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy. In fact, acting as a caregiver is difficult. If you are finding that providing care to a loved one is starting to wear on you, it might be time to look into hiring a professional caregiver.

Stress can cause health issues, including poor vision.

In fact, caregiver burnout is one of the biggest issues that family caregivers will face. This occurs when the day to day grind of providing care leads to feelings of depression, low energy, or even anger within the caregiver. As you might have guessed, this prevents the caregiver from doing the good job that she originally set out to do when they started helping their loved one. Sometimes, this occurs just because the family caregiver has too big of a load on their shoulders and needs some temporary help. At other times, this happens because the person attempting to give care does not have the right tools or skillset to do the job correctly. The help of a professional, either permanently or temporarily, can help alleviate this.
