The Importance of Emergency Preparation

Last year, when a hurricane swept through Florida, many nursing homes were found to be lacking their emergency preparations. Some individuals died or suffered as a result of this lack of planning. This wasn’t necessarily the fault of any one individual or group, but rather a consequence of a lack of adequate planning. A Senate-led investigation recently determined that a lack of oversight by both state and federal government agencies was the culprit.

It was real people that were impacted by the hurricane, and there are families out there right now that lost someone that they cared about during this awful disaster. Even though it is more difficult to safely transport someone that is unable to get around on their own, we have an innate duty to help those that cannot easily help themselves. Hopefully, the suffering that occurred will not be repeated in the future. Hopefully, we will have learned from our mistakes and nursing homes across the country will adopt better practices when it comes to emergency preparedness.

Emergency Preparation is a must in your senior care planning.

In the end, regardless of the protections that the law may or may not provide under emergency conditions, we have an obligation to try and give our loved ones the best care that we possibly can. If they are in a nursing home, then we want to make sure that the nursing home has some sort of effective emergency protocol in place to make sure that the residents are held as safely as possible given the circumstances. If our elderly family members still reside in their homes, then we need to make sure that we have put together a plan to keep them safe in the event that

Safety is just one of the priorities you should focus on when looking for a caregiver for your mom or dad. There are other things to consider, of course, but covering the big important topics like safety and health is a good starting point. Hopefully you will never find yourself in a situation where your home needs to be evacuated because of a storm or other disaster, but if it does, it’s important to have a procedure set in place ahead of time. This way, if something were to happen, you can take the steps needed to continue doing what is best for your family.

Again, hopefully this is something this is something that you will never need to worry about. The tough part about planning for an emergency is that you truly never know whether or not you will need it or not. But, in the event that an emergency does happen you want to be assured that your caregiver, whether it’s a professional or a family member, knows what to do. There are very few guarantees in life, and this is something that can never be guaranteed. However, if every step of precaution is taken, you can rest a little bit easier that your loved one is in good hands.
