Coffee Helps Your Brain?

Who doesn’t love a good cup of coffee in the morning? A cup of coffee, regardless of how you take it, can be a great way to start your day. If you’re a coffee drinker, there might be even more good news in store for you. A new study from the Krembil Brain Institute indicated that drinking coffee could possibly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. They noticed that individuals who drank coffee were less likely to develop these diseases, indicating that there is some sort of positive correlation between the two.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that drinking coffee will lead to protection from these diseases, however. There’s still a lot more research needed in this area before a conclusion of this magnitude can be arrived at. However, it does warrant an interesting question. Why do coffee drinkers seem to be protected from these degenerative brain diseases?

The research from Krembil Brain Institute attempted to point to answers regarding this question. They posited the idea that there must be some sort of chemical compound that is in coffee or is released by coffee’s presence in the body that protects the brain. To test this hypothesis, they used three different types of coffee: light roast, dark roast, and decaffeinated dark roast. They found that dark roast and decaf both had the same impact on brain protection, indicating that caffeine is the the important component found within coffee.

New research indicates that coffee has a positive correlation regarding the prevention of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

What’s the application of this study to senior care today? Well, for starters, it backs up some of the current trends in research that say that drinking coffee is good for you. If you or another loved one drinks coffee and it is not causing any sort of health issue, such as hypertension, then there is no reason why you should stop. Of course, speak to a doctor if you have other health issues that you are concerned about regarding this. Caffeine can make blood pressure issues and things like anxiety worse, so coffee isn’t right for everyone.

The other application is that it helps us to be more aware of cognitive disorders, especially chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. When a loved one suffers from a disease like this, we have an obligation to help them, and studies that look at these diseases bring about more public awareness regarding them. These diseases are not easy to deal with, but the more that the general public knows and understands regarding them, the more likely you are to get the help and support that you need.

That’s really what it comes down to. There’s no cure for either of these illnesses, so finding the right level of help for your family is important. This might mean professional in-home care, public assistance when it comes to treatment, or help from a family member when it comes to providing for your loved one’s needs. As always, please get in touch with us if you have any questions about care or how we can help you to give your loved one the professional help that they deserve.
