Are Hospitals Giving Senior Care Enough Attention?

You can tell a lot about what’s important to people by how they spend their money and their time. The same holds true for an organization, such as a hospital. You can get a good idea of what’s important to the management of an organization by where they focus these two key resources.

 

A recent movement in care is pointing to the idea that not enough seniors are being given in our hospitals, and that the attention that these individuals need is being spent in other areas. That’s not to say that there are not areas of care that are being given too much attention–all groups and types of illnesses could probably benefit from more attention. But even though some people will develop cancer, AIDS, or diabetes, everyone will get older over time. Unfortunately, it is a fact that some folks are not getting needed attention.

 

Today, so many hospitals are focusing on specific areas of care. For example, the State of California just authorized a $1.5 billion bill that will allow children’s hospitals to renovate and expand their services. There’s no doubt that this is a great thing; caring for children is an honorable and noble thing. However, this is certainly not the only area where additional growth in our care system is needed. Thanks to the Baby Boomer generation reaching the age of senior citizens, there are more elderly individuals in the United States than ever before. With all of the focus that some news outlets are giving to the senior care worker shortage, it would only make sense that the government pass measures to protect this vulnerable portion of the population, too.

 

Protecting kids is important. I am not disputing this at all. There is a huge need for more care for kids. But this isn’t the only area of need. 100 years ago, hospitals needed to focus more on child care simply because the childhood mortality rate was so high. Today, modern medicine has improved a good deal–because of tax initiatives like this and other reasons–and children are healthier than ever before. Unfortunately, hospitals are not necessarily changing policies and practices to improve in the care of seniors.

Awareness is a huge first step. Just when it seems like we are making progress here, we can get overshadowed by other good things. There are only a certain number of tax dollars to go around and help our care system improve. It seems like if we truly want to ensure that the people that we love are receiving adequate care, we need to take charge ourselves. It should also be mentioned that senior care is far better today than ever before.

 

That doesn’t mean that there’s not a long way to go, though. There’s still room for improvement. Hopefully, with individuals like us, we can advocate for the seniors in our life and ensure that everyone gets the assistance that they need.
