Is Artificial Intelligence the Next Big Thing?

For those that come to this blog on a regular basis, you know that I am a big fan of the things that technology can do for us and for the seniors that we love. Things like telemedicine, smart homes, and the increased levels of communication that the internet provides us with have changed how we interact with our surroundings. As long as steps of caution are taken to ensure that this is a good thing, then technology can be incredibly useful. It can even improve the quality of life for the elderly family members in your life that you might be concerned about.

Currently, technology is leading the way when it comes to research into dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers from the Douglas Mental Health University Institute in Toronto have developed an algorithm that they claim can help to predict cognitive decline in seniors and lead to a more accurate and earlier of Alzheimer’s disease. When applied to artificial intelligence programs, this algorithm can detect microscopic changes that we as humans cannot accurately pick up on.

This research is in its early stages, but if it is as helpful as these researchers believe that it will be, this could revolutionize how Alzheimer’s is diagnosed. By catching the disease in its earliest stages, doctors have a better chance of delaying the major symptoms that Alzheimer’s brings about and give those with this type of dementia a higher quality of life for a longer period of time. Yes, there’s a lot more work that’s needed here, but this could be a valuable step in the right direction for helping those that will develop Alzheimer’s in the coming years.

Artificial intelligence might be leading the way in helping to diagnose Alzheimer’s.

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s and doctors believe that preventative measures are the best way to protect people from this disease. Of the few things that people know about Alzheimer’s, things like a good diet, exercise, and staying mentally active can help to prevent the disease. These are not one hundred percent effective when it comes to prevention, but research does show that they can be helpful.

Treatment becomes much more difficult once a diagnosis is made. At this point, the best move that doctors can usually make is to slow the spread of the disease. Again, exercise, mental stimulation, and medication can help to make this happen. However, behavior observation is often necessary, too. For example, those with Alzheimer’s can be prone to wandering, which can be very dangerous. Also, there may be changes to their personality. Individuals with Alzheimer’s can become more aggressive. Unfortunately, those with this type of dementia need extra supervision.

If you have a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia, finding a professional caregiver that specializes in senior care is an important step toward protecting the people that you love. If you are located in the Bay Area and this is something that concerns you, get in touch with us today to schedule a free consultation to see how we can connect you to the best care.
