What is Managed Care?

Managed care covers many different things, but in general it refers to arrangements made between a health care provider and an individual. When it comes to insurance, this often refers to restrictions that insurance companies place on which doctors and hospitals can be used by a patient. The goal of this type of care is to reduce costs, both for insurance companies and for the people receiving care. Unfortunately, the negative aspects of managed care can sometimes get in the way of the quality of treatment that someone receives, and this can be particularly troublesome when it comes to senior care.

After all, with senior care, you want your mom or dad to receive the best possible care. You want them to get the help that they need to get through each day safely. You want the best possible care, regardless of what an insurance company says. Luckily, some companies are expanding their service to take more senior services into account.

Over the past few years, some changes to Medicare Advantage plans have helped more managed care plans to include senior living and senior care facilities. Overall, these can be a very good thing, especially for seniors that do not have family members to advocate for them. However, a lack of awareness or misinformation has led many people that might benefit from one of these programs to decline the service or to not know to ask for it.

Managed care can be helpful for many.

Now, it needs to be mentioned that this isn’t universally true. Not all insurance companies are using managed care in this manner, and senior care isn’t necessarily going to be covered by your insurance. But, this trend is a good thing. The growing number of senior citizens in the world has made it necessary for big businesses to take this into account. It’s a trend that will continue, especially as the senior population continues to grow over the coming years like it is expected to.

Can a managed care plan help you or a family member? Maybe. If you have questions about this, your insurance provider will be able to give you more information. However, in a world where paying for senior care can sometimes be difficult, taking advantage of the programs that are offered can be a good step forward when it comes to taking control of your health and your future.

If this is something that sounds like it but might help you, the first step is to find out if you’re eligible for it. A call to your insurance company’s customer service department will get you this information. In many cases, the company will assign you a case manager. They do this because many studies have shown that effective managed care keeps people healthier, and reduces the overall cost that the insurance company will be responsible for.

In other cases, alternative measures for paying for care will be necessary. Each individual situation will be different, and one healthcare plan won’t necessary be the best for everyone. Be sure to take your family’s situation into account before beginning anything.
