The Connection Between Stroke and Dementia

New research highlights just how close the connection between having a stroke and developing dementia is. According to a study conducted by the University of Exeter, having a stroke doubles the risk that someone will have dementia during their lifetime.

The link between these two health issues had been previously known, but it wasn’t clear just how strong the connection was. According to their published results, this is the strongest link yet found between the two. Unfortunately, although the link is strong, no new research has yet emerged on how to prevent this issue. This study was just an observation, and not a clinical study. Still, it is helpful information as researchers have gained more data in the fight against disease.

This link persisted even after the researchers took into account the common warning signs and risk factors of each of these things. Things like high blood pressure, diabetes, and other types of cardiovascular disease can influence both a stroke and the development of dementia, and after taking these things into account, the connection between stroke and dementia still stood at a significantly high correlation.

This was a very large scale study. Over 3.2 million people from around the world were looked at during this study. 48 different studies that looked at similar data were also incorporated into this one. Usually, a study must have about 2,000 randomly selected people to have statistical significance within the U.S. Obviously this study easily surpassed that number, giving the results of it a lot of weight in the medical community. Hopefully, the findings will help to fuel better research moving forward and help to prevent both strokes and the development of dementia. There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done in both of these areas, especially when we begin to think about the impact that either of these things can have on the quality of life of the people that we love.

These findings were published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.

There is a strong link between stroke and the development of dementia.

Stroke can cause a large number of health difficulties, various disabilities being prominent amongst them. When a loved one has trouble getting through their day because of a disability, senior care can become necessary. Many types of care are expensive and provide a lot of attention and services that are not necessary, and picking the right type of care and the right caregiver can be a tough task in itself. That’s why we believe that in-home care is so helpful. Compared to some types of care, it is a lot more cost effective. And, because it is individualized based upon the needs of the person requiring assistance, there are never services provided that aren’t needed, which helps keep costs down even more.
