A New Weapon in the Fight Against Elder Abuse

The state of Wisconsin is doing something a little unorthodox when it comes to the fight against elder abuse: they are giving families small, secret cameras to keep in their loved one’s rooms in order to help precisely identify when abuse is taking place, and who is to blame for it. This has gotten the approval of those in high positions within the state, including the Attorney General. Hopefully, the possibility that someone is being recorded will be enough to stop cases of abuse from occurring. It also has the potential to save people from the thousands of cases of abuse that go unreported each year.

It’s possible that other states may allow this in the future.

Think about elder abuse for a moment. It’s usually someone who is close to the senior citizen that is involved in this, in one way or another. And these cases are not always cleared up quickly, which could leave the person who is at risk of abuse in a dangerous position. Better surveillance where abuse is suspected could save lives by helping to put away the people who are harming others without escalating the risk.

Elder abuse cases may be resolved more quickly in Wisconsin with the use of hidden cameras.

Obviously, preventing abuse altogether is a much better solution. Unfortunately, this isn’t always possible. That doesn’t mean that you should leave your family exposed to the risk of abuse. By taking the proper steps when hiring a caregiver service or placing your loved one in a nursing home or assisted living facility, you can take away a good deal of the risk that elder abuse will ever happen. If you are going to hire a professional caregiver of any sort, you need to know a lot about them. You need to be able to trust them since they will be working with someone who you love and who might not be able to advocate for themselves.

At Paradise In-Home Care, we take the safety and health of the people we serve very seriously. That’s why we conduct background checks on everyone that we consider hiring before we hire them. We want to make sure that only those with good intentions work for us. After this, we then provide training to help them master their caregiving skills and knowledge. Not only do we want kind and compassionate people working for us, we want to make sure that they are able to spot signs of abuse if this might be happening from somewhere else. It is only after this that we would allow someone to go into your home and work with your loved one. This is certainly not a guarantee that abuse will never occur within your family, but it is a big safeguard on our end against it. We’re not the only company that takes such precautions, but not all do. Be sure that you only work with a caregiver who has been vouched for in an official capacity. If you have questions about this, do not hesitate to ask–either someone at Paradise or whatever other company you might be thinking of working with.
