Care in the Home Has Additional Benefits

For years, we have been believers that in-home care provides a type of care and compassion that cannot be reproduced in any other setting. That doesn’t mean the in-home care is superior to every other type of care, but it does mean that when help is given in the familiarity of someone’s own home, there are things that this adds to the care that cannot be done in an institutionalized setting.

Research is beginning to support this concept. For quite a while, studies have pointed to the idea that those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease decline more slowly in cognitive and physical health when they are in familiar settings. Again, this type of care isn’t always the best, especially when Alzheimer’s is in its advanced stages and more frequent assistance is required, but it does help a lot of people to live a higher quality of life for longer periods of time.

It turns out that in-home help when it comes to senior care is not the only area where staying in the home has its benefits. When someone has a stroke, a physical disability often occurs as the result of the temporary restriction of oxygenated blood flow to the brain. To help regain normal body movement, physical therapy is often prescribed. It is one of the few treatment methods that has been found to be consistently effective. However, for someone with a disability, leaving the house is often close to impossible. Recently, researchers out of the University of California, Irvine, found that therapy conducted within the home is effective, too. To quote Dr. Steven C. Cramer, “the current findings support the utility of a computer-based system in the home, used under the supervision of a licensed therapist, to provide clinically meaningful rehab therapy.”

Care in the home goes far beyond in-home care.

In other words, when therapy is done via a computer or tablet screen, the results are beneficial to the person if they are working with a therapist. For those elderly individuals that have trouble leaving the house or cannot drive themselves, this is a great way to help them recover from a devastating stroke, and still maintain their independence. Again, it’s not perfect for everyone, but it seems like there is a lot of potential for this to further improve the lives of many seniors.
