Trained Caregivers Provide More for Families

Senior care is arguably one of the most important professions in our communities right now because this care allows other types of work to happen. What they mean by this is that senior care provides a level of support for families so that they can continue with their lives and careers without having to leave the workforce to help a loved one on a daily basis.

Some have argued that this kind of mentality is a copout and neglecting the duties that family members have to one another. But the fact remains that a trained professional caregiver is going to provide a higher level of assistance to someone than someone who is untrained. When looked at in this light, acting as a family caregiver may actually do more harm than good. Yes, the specifics of each situation will determine this, but a trained caregiver has the potential to provide better care than an untrained one. But this isn’t the only reason why using professional senior care can be more beneficial to your family.

The senior population is growing, and many working families are finding that they have not just children or grandchildren that they need to support, but also elderly parents or grandparents. This can place a strain on a family’s ability to advance their own careers. This is where care steps in. The long term cost of an in-home caregiver tends to be cheaper than if the working members of a family were to leave their jobs and provide that care themselves. But many people do not look at it this way and leave their jobs in order to become family caregivers. For some, this is a great choice. It allows you to be close to your parents and it allows you to be there for them. For others, the price of the sacrifice is too great and it ends up having a negative impact on other member of the family.

A trained caregiver is able to provide benefits for an entire family, not just the individual they are assisting.

In the past, people have relied on nursing homes to help them with this burden, but there are a few issues with this. For one, many of the people going into nursing homes do not need this level of care. This creates a second issue: current nursing homes are getting to a point where if the growing population continues to utilize nursing homes at the same rate that they have been, there will not be enough room for everyone. In the end, many who could benefit from a nursing home’s care will not be able to receive it.

Luckily, there are solutions out there. Home based care is one of them. In-home care does not provide for medical needs like a nursing home does, but it can provide help with the activities of daily living that are a necessary part of everyone’s daily life. For those that need only a minimal amount of assistance to get through each day, this is not only cheaper than leaving a job or using a nursing home, but it also allows for your loved one to stay in their home, maintain their independence for longer, and to still receive all of the supervision and help that they need to stay healthy and safe.
