Senior citizens are not the only ones that can potentially benefit from senior care. A new trend is emerging in Scotland, and so far, it appears to be a promising one. Many individuals that are not elderly are finding that they benefit from the use of senior care homes. This specific research focused on those that were suffering from neurological disabilities, but this trend does extend well beyond. The research was compiled recently and presented by the BBC.
The survey found that roughly 86 percent of people living in senior care homes, either nursing homes or assisted living facilities, were suffering from some sort of neurological issue. Of that 86 percent, 20 percent were below the age of 65. Many of these people are in a home because there is no other way for them to get the attention that they need to make it through the day safely otherwise. These people may have been injured, suffer from a disease like Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis, or they might just need the care and supervision that can only be given by around the clock caregiving.
In many cases, there are no great alternatives for these people when it comes to care. Living in a nursing home or an assisted living facility can be expensive, but when there are no other options, families make due and make the sacrifices needed to help their loved ones get the care and attention that is needed.
It would only be fair to point out that not all of those who receive what would traditionally be considered senior care for a neurological disability are getting the time and attention that they need. This is possible even in a skilled nursing facility, unfortunately. This is why it’s so important that you go over your options when it comes to care before a decision is made for a loved one. It’s not always realistic to plan care out years in advance, but if you have a loved one that is getting older and senior care looks like it might be on the horizon, then taking steps to prepare a plan now will be prudent. Things will probably change before you ever use your plan, but having a basic idea of what to do will be of immense help to you.
The senior care process can be tricky to navigate, but if you know what you are doing beforehand, some of the difficulty diminishes. This is a tough and stressful time of life, but by being better prepared ahead of time, the stress will not get in the way of allowing you to make strong decisions for your family.
When it comes to those with a neurological disability using a senior care service, there are a lot of unique needs that need to be met. Care must be person-centered so that each unique case is treated appropriately. Care must also be compassionate and trustworthy. This is a group with a special set of circumstances, and caregivers must be trained in this area. Be sure that whatever your loved one’s needs might be, the caregiver you use has the right background to help them thrive.
