Anticipating and Preventing Falls

A fall is one of the most devastating injuries that an elderly individual can face. Not only can a fall cause the typical injuries like bruises and broken bones, but because of the decreased immune system and lower bone density that seniors often experience, a fall can lead to a lifetime of disability and illness. If this is something that can be avoided, obviously it is something that we all want to do. The question is: how do we best help our loved ones to avoid such a situation?

One of the best ways to prevent a fall is to have a trained, professional caregiver work with your elderly loved one. Many recently reported falls, including fatal ones, have been attributed to the fact that the person who fell did not have the right supervision when attempting a transfer. Having someone helping your loved one who is trained in proper transferring and transportation of an elderly individual can go a long way toward reducing injury. Further, someone with training in fall prevention can better identify tripping hazards around the house and help to pinpoint potentially dangerous locations (like the bathroom) where safety items can be installed.

Falls are going to continue to be more and more pervasive as the senior population grows. While the fact that the overall population is living longer is undisputedly a good thing, it does present a new set of issues that will need to be overcome. Falls are just one of the new complications that will grow in the coming years. Having the expertise on your side to overcome this problem is a must if you want to help your family to continue to live a high quality of life.

Preventing falls is one of the best ways to promote a high quality of life.

Being able to anticipate which types of situations will increase the risk of a fall and then taking the proper steps to try and prevent potential pitfalls from ever becoming an issue can be an effective way to increase the quality of life of the seniors in our lives. If this is not an area where you have received sufficient training or knowledge, hiring a professional caregiver to assist you can help to make this an easier task.

The prevention of injury to an elderly loved one should be one of your highest priorities when it comes to senior care. Sometimes, these things can be achieved with just a few minor changes to your home. When it comes to fall prevention, this is often the case. Still, having a professional caregiver in your home, keeping an eye on things while you’re away at work and ensuring that the everyday tasks necessary to maintain safety and health are completed can go a long way. This way, when you are out of the home you can have the peace of mind that you deserve when it comes to knowing that the people that you love are safe and sound.
