What Exactly Does Medicare Cover?

Medicare is by far the most commonly used health insurance within the senior citizen population. It covers a lot of stuff, but it doesn’t cover everything. A lot of people wonder exactly what Medicare does and does not cover, but unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to this. Because there are different types of Medicare and different supplements and privatized versions of the policy out there, the coverage that you have through Medicare will be unique and based upon the specific policies that you have.

The world of health insurance is tough to navigate. There’s a reason why you must have a license and undergo consistent training and continuing education courses to be in the business. It is complicated and it is overwhelming. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not important. Care is expensive–whether you’re talking about senior care or any other type of health care. Having the right insurance on your side can make it a lot easier to manage. Knowing something about insurance and how to use it effectively is a must during your senior years.

If you find that Medicare coverage through Part A and B along with prescription coverage (Part D) alone is not enough, then you do have options available to you. Medicare Advantage (commonly referred to as Part C) or other supplemental plans are designed to fill this gap in coverage. These come in various different forms and vary from state to state. Depending on your needs and healthcare goals, you have a lot of options before you when it comes to offsetting the cost of care. The offerings and the prices will vary depending on the state where you live.

Medicare alone does not cover all of the senior care costs you will incur.

In reality, a lot of essentials are not covered by Medicare. Things like dental care, many types of specialty treatments, and yes, even senior care, are for the most part, not addressed by Medicare. An additional type of policy or supplement is typically needed if you want to ensure that you have a more complete coverage. This will come with an additional monthly cost, but many people find this to be worthwhile if their needs are covered. If they aren’t addressed properly, then the extra premium that comes up every month is just a needless expense. Before you sign up for anything or make any commitments, make sure that the things you are paying for will truly be helpful to you.

If you do have questions about insurance, it’s important to get in touch with a licensed health insurance professional. Many insurance specialists work off of commission, and because of this, you do need to be careful about whom you purchase from. You don’t want to buy a policy just because someone will make money off of you. Instead, go over your options with someone that you trust and make sure that you are buying something that will truly benefit you. If this is something that seems overwhelming to you, then bring someone along with you that can speak up and ask questions as an advocate on your behalf. Insurance should not be a burden, but rather something that helps to enhance your quality of life as you age.
