National Spotlight on Elder Abuse

One of the great things about technology is that more information is available than ever before. This is especially true when it comes to senior care and health care. Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of bad information that exists, too. One of these negative issues is the concept of senior abuse. As technology helps us to disseminate and learn new things more quickly, we are finding that elder abuse is more widespread than what was once thought.

 

Thankfully, many states are taking proactive steps in light of this. Although a lot of improvement has been made at the state level, there’s still a lot of room for growth. South Carolina is one of the states that has a long way to go. According to a recent survey, South Carolina ranks last when it comes to the prevalence of elder abuse. This is especially true at the legislative level. South Carolina has spent very little time focusing on the health and welfare of the elderly, and it has led to a greater rate of reported cases of abuse, particularly in nursing homes.

 

With about 5 percent of all elderly individuals living in a nursing home at the end of their life, this means that this is a vulnerable portion of the population. And with the number of seniors growing larger every day, it is a problem that needs to be addressed soon if seniors are going to stay as safe as they can be kept in South Carolina.

 

Hopefully, thanks to the readily available information that is out there, the problems that South Carolina and many other areas are facing can be made more visible. South Carolina is certainly not alone when it comes to needing to deal with elder abuse. Even states that are handling elder abuse better than others have room for improvement. Bringing this issue to the light can potentially bring us one step closer to a solution to the problem.
