Qualities of the Best Caregivers

At Paradise In-Home Care, we are in the business of helping other people. When we hire a new caregiver, we know exactly what we are looking for. There are some skills that can be learned, but others that cannot be taught no matter what. I put this list together to give you an idea of what a caregiver should be able to do.

Whether you are looking for a job as a caregiver or you are looking to hire one and you’re not sure what you should be focused on in your search, hopefully this brief rundown will help make your life a little bit easier.

A knowledge of the basic skills of caregiving is a good start. There should be some sort of training in place, including emergency preparedness. This includes a knowledge of how to apply medications and perform household tasks correctly and efficiently, but it also means knowing what to do in case something goes wrong. If your mom trips and falls, you want to be ensured that their caregiver is following the right steps to get them the medical help that they need right away. The same goes for any other medical emergency that you can think of. Knowing what to do takes some education and some experience.

Caregivers must also be reliable. You want someone that you can trust to work with your family. This means being on time, keeping commitments, and being free of a troublesome history.

Great caregivers also must have a strong constitution, and remain as a calming presence no matter what happens. Caring for those with dementia can be trying, and it can be very easy to take the setbacks and frustrations personally. This will add a lot of stress to the caregiver’s life and make the job torture. An ability to remain strong is a must if someone wants to stay in this profession. Caregiver burnout is very real, and a strong constitution helps ensure that this doesn’t happen immediately.

The best caregivers all share similar qualities.

On a similar note, patience is also needed. Senior care can have moments where you never get a break, but it’s also a field where a high degree of patience is needed. If that patience is lacking, then the quality of care that’s given will likely suffer. Even when things are moving painstakingly slowly, patience is necessary in order to avoid mistakes and injuries. This can’t really be taught, although it can be refined with practice.

Perhaps the biggest and most important character trait that a caregiver must have is a sense of empathy. Without this, all of the other things might be in place, but there will still be something lacking when it comes to the quality of care that is given. Empathy is a compassion and high degree of caring for other people and their needs. Unfortunately, this is something that just can’t be taught. You either have it or you don’t. It’s something that can be practiced, but it can’t really ever be learned.

Sure, there are other things that great caregivers must be able to do, but these are the big ones. Hopefully, this has been a help.
