Better Treatment for Stroke Victims

Stroke is one of the most common health crises for elderly individuals in the United States. There are about 800,000 stroke victims each year in the United States, according to one estimate. If the recovery rate for these individuals were improved upon, there would be less of a reliance on senior care for these individuals, and the people who suffer from this health catastrophe will begin to see a better quality of life thanks to better treatment.

 

This new study aimed to discover whether the combination of traditional motor skill physical rehab and plasticity therapy was safe and effective. Plasticity therapy looks to stimulate the vagus nerve with the hopes of increasing healing and recovering movement. While each of these has shown some degree of value in the past, the combination of the two has been largely disused because it was unknown how well they would interact with one another. New research coming from a company call MicroTransponder indicates that not only are these two methods of treatment safe when combined, but they are extremely effective, too.

 

Their findings were published recently in the medical journal, Stroke. The study looked at 17 different people throughout the U.S. that had suffered from a stroke. Although this was an early stage test, the findings indicated that the combination of these treatment methods could have tremendous possibility for improving stroke rehabilitation moving into the future.

The big thing for us to remember is that people who suffer from a disability, either because of a stroke or for another reason, have unique needs as they go throughout their days. These are not needs that can easily or safely be met on their own. Things like therapy and rehab can be helpful, but that will not cause an immediate change.
