Senior Care Homes are Being Integrated with Communities

Seniors, even those that face the challenges of a disability, are more active now than ever before. Socialization occurs more frequently thanks to advances in technology and innovative types of care, like senior day care centers. However, in most instances, this need for companionship is not being sufficiently met. Luckily, many caregiver services are trying to fix this.

One problem that many seniors face once they enter institutionalized care, such as that received in a nursing home or assisted living facility, is that they are cut off from their community. No longer do they have access to the same opportunities for socialization that they once did. Now, this might not seem like a pressing need, but emotional health has been shown to have a direct link to physical health. People who are happy and engaged in relationships with others are more likely to live longer and healthier lives. With this in mind, it makes sense that this would be a much larger concern than what one might think.

Seniors have social needs to. Bringing their communities to them can help to meet this need.

A group of caregivers in Canada are working to rectify this problem. Rather than allowing the residents of their care homes remain outside of the general community, they are working to bring the general community to the people that they help. By creating pubs, restaurants, daycares, movie theaters, and other public businesses in or near senior care centers, a sense of community is being restored to many seniors. This is an ongoing project, but so far it has been met with a positive outlook.

Is this necessarily best for everyone? No. But it will definitely be helpful for some. That’s one of the big things that needs to be remembered about senior care; what is best for some people is not always what’s best for everyone. This is a unique approach to care–and that’s a good thing. Not everyone benefits from the same thing. A unique approach will cover the emotional needs of some people that cannot have those needs met anywhere else.

When you have an elderly loved one that needs care, it can be tempting to just choose the type of care that is most convenient for you. That might mean going with a caregiver that’s close to your house, is cheap enough to afford, or is completely covered by insurance. There are a number of reasons why we choose caregivers, and not all of them are great reasons. It’s vital for us to remember that the needs of our loved ones should be our highest priority. Once those are met, then matters of convenience can help to become deciding factors.
