Taking Better Care of Our Seniors

 

You may have heard about something called the senior care crisis. This is a reference to the growing number of seniors in the population, and the shortage of senior care professionals, both medical and non-medical. It is estimated that the need for care will outgrow the availability of it in a few decades if nothing changes. Fortunately, this need has been spotted before the “crisis” has occurred and steps are being taken to alleviate the concerns.

 

The United States is not the only country that is facing a potential senior care crisis. In Canada, it’s estimated that 25 percent of the population will be age 65 or older in less than 20 years. France is in a similar situation.

 

This is especially troublesome in these countries because of the fact that these countries have a socialized healthcare system. For all of the benefits that this can bring people, it also comes with a certain number of dangers. An overwhelmed portion of the healthcare system, like what is currently occurring within the senior care sector, is a lot harder to fix because there is no private incentive to step in and correct the issue.

 

The U.S. is not without problems in the senior care industry. However, there are steps that you can take to help protect your elderly loved ones and ensure that they get the best possible senior care. The best place to start is to know what your mom or dad needs as far as care goes. If they have dementia, then memory care will become necessary. When you find a caregiver you trust, you can be assured that your parent will be cared for.

There are a few areas of care that will need to expand if the healthcare system is going to keep up with the growing population of elderly people in our communities. Technology will need to be improved, especially as it is made more and more realistic to install and use devices within the home. Memory care will also need to expand if professionals are going to meet the needs of the increasing number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

 

Avoiding abuse will also become a hot topic in the coming years. Many states have put stricter regulations and safeguards in place to prevent senior abuse from occurring, but this will still be a growing concern in the coming years, especially as the number of seniors grows and scams become more lucrative for those with malicious intent. Again, this is why finding a caregiver that you trust early is so important. If you have a caregiver that truly has your mom or dad’s best interests at heart, it will be much easier to spot signs of abuse early and to prevent it from happening altogether.

 

It is important that we take good care of our elderly loved ones. Even if your parent doesn’t need care yet, there’s a strong chance that they might. Having a plan in place before it’s needed can help ensure they get the help that they will need.
