Men are Great Caregivers, Too

One of the commonly faced stereotypes that we often see in the senior care business is that men are inferior family caregivers. As a company that employs many men, we have always found this stereotype to be a little off, simply because we’ve never seen evidence that it could be true. Recent research confirms our thoughts. A study from out of the University of Oxford found that men are just as responsive as women when their spouse becomes ill and needs help. Additionally, the men that have a spouse that is struggling with health are often better caregivers later in their lifetimes when their spouse needs senior care.

538 couples were looked at in Germany with an average age of 69 years old. Between 2001 and 2015, these couples were evaluated to see if either developed a need for care. If they did, how it was handled was watched. Things like care, running errands, and other things that a senior caregiver would handle were looked at and processed. For the most part, men fared just as well caring for their spouse as women did.

For the senior care industry, this is good news. The growing need for senior care in the U.S. has placed a good deal of stress on the industry as a whole. Knowing that spouses are more skilled at caring than thought is a positive piece of news.

Research shows that men are just as good as women as caregivers.

There are exceptions on both sides of the coin. Some women are not great caregivers, just like there are some poor men. However, your mom or dad does not deserve poor care. That’s where care services like ours come in. In-home care can go a long way toward improving the quality of life that your parent faces. If they do not have a spouse or if good care isn’t realistic, then a caregiver can be the next best thing.

Finding a good caregiver is important, but unfortunately, it’s not always possible for a family member to step in and take care of everything. Even when a family member is available and willing, they do not always have the necessary skills to adequately and safely assist their loved one. This is why having a professional care service that you trust on your side is so important.

Of course, a family knows all that there is to know about each other. That level of intimacy can make up for a lot of what a professional caregiver can do that others cannot. However, finding the right caregiver can help your loved one to gain a new friend. Matching up personalities correctly is something that can be hit or miss when you go with an independent caregiver, but when you go through a larger care service, this becomes a lot easier. The right caregiver can make a world of difference and help your spouse or parent to not just get the expertise that they deserve in a caregiver, but to gain a new companion, too.
