What You Need to Know About Senior Living

Moving into a new home or living space is never easy. That’s true for us, and it’s true for our elderly parents, too. Senior living, in any form, can be a scary transition for some. Hopefully, this brief guide answers some of your questions that you might have about the various type of senior living that exist.

Senior Community

A senior living community is a group of senior citizens living together in an apartment complex style arrangement, or something similar. These are communities for primarily older adults who do not have advanced physical disabilities. A senior community is a great option if your parent wants to be located close to people their own age. One of the tough parts about aging is that friends move away or pass away, and life can become increasingly isolated. A senior community helps to avoid this. This kind of community can help instill a larger sense of belonging and purpose in people’s lives when the right one is found.

Senior living comes in many shapes and sizes.

Nursing Home

This is what most people think of when they think about senior care. A nursing home is best for people who have advanced medical needs and need some sort of professional assistance or monitoring on a daily basis. Nursing homes tend to have a negative association in people’s minds, but they do serve an important purpose for many. A nursing home can help people with physical needs get the care that they need more regularly. Unfortunately, a lot of people who do not need nursing homes sometimes find themselves living in these facilities, which has contributed to their negative reputation. This is unfortunate and unnecessary. Still, the right nursing home can help someone in need to live a much higher quality of life.

Assisted Living

Assisted living combines the elements of a senior community with the increased supervision of a nursing home. This is a group of seniors living together with more direct assistance than they would have in a senior living community. If something were to happen, a caregiver is right there to step in. Also, those with physical disabilities or dementia have the assistance that they need to get through the day safely. This is not a staff of medical professionals, but rather trained caregivers. Depending on the facility that you look at, there may be a doctor of nurse on call, but assisted living facilities do not have a medical team on the premises.

Other forms of senior living do exist, but not all of them are in community form as these three are. In-home care can be a valuable type of care for a loved one that wants to stay in their own home, for example. Adult day care, although not technically a type of senior living, can help accommodate a lot of the social needs that these other forms of care focus on, all while keeping your mom or dad in their home. Your family is unique, and the care you choose should be, too. Finding the best option should be your priority.
