It’s Best to Start the Senior Care Talk Early

This probably makes a lot of sense to you, but it is definitely worth saying again. The sooner that the senior care discussion begins, the better.

Like many other things that are true, this is a lot easier said than done. There are many reasons why this is the case, and it would be impossible to list every possible reason why this is the case, but we’re going to explore a few of the big reasons why starting this conversation is hard, and why it’s important that it be done anyway.

Reason #1: It’s an emotional topic.

Talking about senior care is never easy from an emotional standpoint. This runs on both sides of things. It’s tough for you to talk about because it involves talking about a topic that’s hard for you. You don’t want your elderly loved one to be aging and to have to deal with all of the needs that come with this. It’s hard to think about your mom or dad having difficulty just getting through the day. Sometimes, it’s easy to just not think about this stuff at all.

And it’s hard for your parent. No one wants to admit to themselves that they can’t do the things that they once never even thought about. It can be impossible to admit that the simplest of tasks are now a struggle. They’ve held their independence as a given for so long that now that help is needed, it isn’t something that can be acknowledged. Just like it’s easy for you to not think about this, it’s easy for your parent to do the same.

Reason #2: There are different points of view.

This goes along with the first reason, but even if it’s something that both parties acknowledge is an issue, they might not want to deal with it in the same way. Sometimes you think one thing is best, but your mom might want something completely different. Talking about these differences early can help relieve this tension, and ensure that the best choices are made on the first go around. It might take weeks or months before you and your parent fully understand what the best type of care and the best place to receive it might be. Open communication helps make this understanding occur.

The senior care talk might be tough, but it’s important to have it early.

Despite how difficult it can be to talk about, it’s important that you do so. Senior care isn’t always a gradual process. An accident or a medical event can make the need for care an absolute emergency. Things like a living will or trust aren’t always in place, and these decisions might need to be made quickly. If you don’t have any sort of guidance or advice from your mom or dad, you might not even know what their wishes are in these respects. Undoubtedly, you will try to make the best decisions possible, but without any sort of beginning to the conversation, it can be tough to know what’s best.

The sooner you start this conversation, the better that situations like this can be handled. And they can be handled in the best interests of the person that is most directly impacted.
