How Can Artificial Intelligence Help With Senior Care?

You might have heard about artificial intelligence (AI) before. Some of the information out there is very helpful, while other sources can be very misleading. AI has a lot of hype associated with it, but not all of it is good, or even helpful. Here, I’d like to talk about how AI is being used in the senior care world, and how it might be helpful or harmful moving forward. This won’t answer all of your questions about AI, but hopefully it will help you to better understand how it is impacting our elderly loved one’s lives.

 

Right now, AI is being used with great deals of success when it comes to making dementia diagnoses. For example, when AI is incorporated into a brain scan, it can help doctors to make a more accurate diagnosis of whether or not an elderly individual is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia. The details of how this works are far beyond my understanding, but by teaching a computer what a brain with dementia looks like, and then applying that to future scans, a database of knowledge continues to grow and helps doctors to be more and more accurate over time.

AI has actually become more accurate than the most commonly used methods of detecting some types of dementias and strokes. In fact, this is one of the first instances where machine learning has been more accurate than other methods. The hope is that more and more accuracy can be gained.

 

Diagnoses are where AI is the most heavily used right now, but doctors and other researchers could potentially use this technology in many other aspects of life, especially when it comes to senior care. AI can help us to keep better tabs on loved ones that live far away or by themselves. Daily patterns can be learned, and when something seems off, emergency officials could be notified. This type of technology is already being used, but adding advanced AI to it will likely  continue to help it develop and become more accurate with its assessments. AI could also potentially

 

Over the long term, AI is likely to cut costs, too. Right now, this is still a new and developing technology which makes it quite costly. But as certain procedures and uses become more routine and formalized, costs will begin to go down. This might not happen in our lifetimes, but our children will certainly benefit from this feature of AI and integrating it into healthcare of all sorts.

 

It is easy to think about AI and be scared, but much of the fear that has been generated about machine learning has come from science fiction movies. This is a new area, and although it might not be realistic to implement all of the potential that is being uncovered right away, there is a lot of room for growth here. Eventually, it will be us and our families that benefit from it, and that’s exciting. Even now, people are beginning to see the benefits of advanced technology.
