Treatments Help Those Unsupervised to Recover from Stroke

A treatment known as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) has been revolutionary when it comes to reducing the number of stroke related disabilities that have occurred. This drug is given in intravenous form and has earned a reputation as being a “clot buster” thanks to its high level of efficacy. An injection of tPA works by breaking up the clots that cause ischemic stroke and help to restore normal blood flow to the brain in a more timely manner. Ischemic strokes are the most common type of stroke, and if they are not caught early, they can lead to permanent disability or even death. Knowing that a stroke is occurring and calling emergency services immediately is one of the most important things that you can do for a loved one if you suspect they are having a stroke.

But what do you do if your parent has a stroke and no one is around?

History shows that the first two hours after a stroke occurs are crucial when it comes to the likelihood of recovery after someone suffers from a stroke. With this new intravenous tPA treatment, successful recovers become more likely within 4 and a half hours of having suffered from a stroke. This is a much better prognosis for those that live alone or are not supervised when they first suffer symptoms of having had a stroke. The old rule was that this treatment could not be given effectively after the two hour window had passed, but current research indicates that this is not necessarily the case. Positive results can occur for more than double what was once thought the acceptable window of time.

Supervision and quick action can help with a better recovery if someone has a stroke.

Of course, no one wants their loved one to have a stroke. No one wants to have their loved one be alone if they do suffer a stroke, either. Having a caregiver with your mom or dad is one easy way to ensure that they are never alone for extended periods of time. Using an in-home care service could be the right move for your family, even if they seem like they are perfectly healthy. A lot of the time, people wait until something happens to arrange for a caregiver to assist with their family members. In some cases, this is the right choice. But not always. In fact, having a caregiver with your loved one can be the right move even if you look beyond preventative reasons concerning health. A caregiver can be a close companion and provide your loved one with someone to keep them company.
