Changes in New Jersey Law Have Benefits

The presence of untrained or insufficiently trained caregivers is an often overlooked danger, but a very real one nonetheless. For example, if you have an elderly loved one that suffers from dementia, having an in-home care worker in the house that has not ever been trained in how to work with individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, the results could be harmful to your family member. That caregiver might be thoroughly trained as an in-home caregiver, but this is a very specific type of care that needs to be given, and the training is different.

Some states, such as New Jersey, are potentially seeing changes in law that might impact who is able to provide in-home care and under what circumstances. There have been concerns that this could lead to a huge increase in the cost of care, which is already very high in many cases. The concern is that by having caregivers go through further training, the cost of care may become prohibitive to some.

It’s hard to know with certainty just how much prices will increase by, if at all. The complaints about this change in the law are in regards to an increased cost, which is definitely not beneficial to the person in need of care. In that respect, these changes might be harmful. But overall, these changes should be more beneficial than not because they impose a safeguard system to ensure that caregivers have the proper training and backgrounds to do their job. In this respect, this change is a very good thing. It makes sure that more caregivers have the proper accreditation, and the end result is likely to be a higher quality of care.

Any changes in health care regulations can be confusing and frustrating, but the end goal should be that the person receiving care–of any sort–is taken care of to a fuller degree. This goes for senior care, and everything else, too.

Having a memory care team on your side that has received the proper background of training, experience, and has a team working with them to back them up is important. Sure, you might be able to find a caregiver online that is a fraction of the price of another, and they might even have great recommendations and references supporting them. But if the training in the specific type of care that you need is not present, then it doesn’t matter how glowing their reviews are, they are likely not the right choice for your family.

This is why we recommend going through a caregiver service, rather than hiring an independent caregiver. When you work with a service, you are hiring a caregiver who has not only been trained and has the right experience, but you are also finding someone who has been insured and bonded by their employer and has had thorough background checks conducted to make sure that they really are the right person for the job. You might find the perfect independent caregiver online, but odds are you won’t. Going through a service eliminates this random chance, and ensures that the right caregiver for your family’s situation is working with your parent or grandparent.
