We are very lucky here in the San Francisco Bay Area because we have a wide variety of senior care options available to us. We have in-home care, obviously as that’s one of the services that we provide here at Paradise In-Home Care, but there are also many high quality assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospice, and short term rehabilitation centers that specialize not just in senior care, but in unique aspects of this broad category. Is it perfect? No. But there are certainly far more choices here than some other portions of the country have.
This is especially true in rural areas. There is a smaller demand for any type of service in a smaller population setting, and senior care is definitely impacted most heavily by this. Add to the problem that certain types of specialized care may never have been needed in an area. If a need for specialized memory care, for example, were to become needed, the person suffering from this issue and their families would be put at a huge disadvantage. With the growing population of seniors in our country, this is becoming a daily issue in the U.S. Unfortunately, not all areas are able to respond with the same level of attention and professionalism when it comes to meeting the needs of these families.
The population might, by definition, be smaller in rural areas of the country, but that doesn’t mean that finding senior care for those that need it isn’t just as important as it is in rural areas. In fact, despite the distance challenges that many rural areas see because of the longer distance to a hospital, providing care in these areas is sometimes even easier because of the smaller population. For example, finding appropriate care for someone experiencing Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia coupled with aggressive episodes could be a challenge in a city because of a shortage of appropriately trained caregivers, but far fewer caregivers would be needed to treat this issue in a rural area. Depending on the population and the makeup of that population, caregivers might find that they don’t have the same heavy workload that those who work out of a more urban area have.
This is all to say that high quality senior care is needed regardless of what portion of the country someone lives in. Yes, there are hurdles to care, but those exist wherever you might be located. It doesn’t matter where you live; you and your family deserve the best care possible. If you have concerns about your own or a loved one’s care, it’s important that you start making plans before they are needed. Your plans might change 32 times before care is ever needed or you might never need to use care at all. But by having a plan in place just in case, you have started making sure that your family is getting the best in the event that they do need help later on. Here in the Bay Area or another metro area, that might be easier for you, but the same idea applies regardless of where you might be located.
