Caring for Two Different Generations at Once

There is a unique group of individuals that are tasked with both providing care for an elderly parent or grandparent as well as providing care for their own children. This is certainly an overwhelming set of tasks, and attempting to care for multiple generations can be really tough, even for the most with it and organized individuals.

This doesn’t happen a lot of times, but it does happen often enough that it’s not uncommon. Being sandwiched in between two generations in need of assistance happens, and when it does, you will need help. Having more than one person relying on you is tough. When it’s two people that you love dearly, it is also emotionally draining. But just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be rewarding. In fact, this might be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. You just need to approach it correctly.

Some people find themselves in a tough situation caring for two generations at one time.

Sometimes, care is something that you know you will need for months or even years ahead of time. Sometimes, you might be caught completely off guard by the fact that a loved one is in need of assistance. Whether your loved one is suffering from a slow physical decline, or they suffer from a sudden accident that leaves them suddenly disabled, senior care can become necessary for someone, even if they aren’t at the typical age where care is needed. For example, there have been instances of those in their 50s suffering from dementia. Sometimes, diseases like MS or diabetes can make it so those that are even younger have a severe disability that requires care. Each individual is unique, and senior care doesn’t always apply to seniors.

This might require you to care for both a parent and a child at the same time. In many cases, it’s impossible for you to do all of the things that you need to do to give both generations the attention that they deserve. Enlisting the help of a family member or a care service can help. Care is not designed to pass of that responsibility, but rather make it so that you can keep your job, give everyone the help they need, and still be a good member of the family. It’s tough, but it is possible.

Finally, please know that things can get better. This is a frustrating and trying time, but it won’t always be so stressful. Having a quality senior care service on your side will go a long way when it comes to reducing stress. Whether it’s an in-home caregiver that comes in to help out once in a while, or if it’s a nursing home that you trust to care for a loved one around the clock, having a senior care service that you know and trust is the first step toward improving the quality of life of your family members. Maybe it’s just one person in your family that needs help, but when care is a must, it can take a toll on everyone. The right care can make this process so much easier.
