In the world of medicine, researchers often find that a specific strategy that they were using to find an advance in one field of medicine is a failure, but the same or a similar strategy can be effective in another area. That’s exactly what Alzheimer’s disease researchers are discovering now. Alzheimer’s researchers have been interested in the tau protein and its relationship to the development and progression of the disease in the past. However, they have recently discovered that tau deficiencies have proven to be helpful in mice brains when strokes are induced. Lowering the amounts of the tau proteins that were thought to be a major part of Alzheimer’s has actually helped to protect mice in this instance. High tau levels are associated with early death in Alzheimer’s, but lowering these levels has not proven to be a cure for the disease.

 

Trial and error is a part of the research process, and this goes way beyond medicine. Best selling authors have stories about receiving hundreds of rejection letters before they sold their first book. Thomas Edison is reported to have said of his failed attempts to create a light bulb that he didn’t consider them failures, but rather 999 different ways to not create the light bulb before finally arriving on the answer. Any advancements in the field of medicine are welcome, and when things like this happen, they should be applauded for the successes they are. Even if they don’t help the original audience, they are still a big benefit to our elderly loved ones, and that is a great thing.

 

To be fair, this line of Alzheimer’s treatment is not a failure. The area of study is still being explored.
