My favorite time of the year is fall. I love that it is still nice out, and I love how the leaves start to change color. As a kid, we would sometimes go camping at this time of year to enjoy the leaves and the rest of nature. They are memories I’ll never forget, and for good reason. They were family experiences full of warm, loving memories.
Now that I’m an adult, it’s my responsibility to help create memories like that for my kids. But thanks to the fact that I have an elderly parent and grandparent, I am in an in between position. My mom and grandmother are not able to get around as much as they once could, and I spend a lot of time helping them out with activities. For people in positions like this, there can often be a feeling of being torn between the two. It doesn’t need to be this way, and in fact, it’s quite easy to do. Multi-generational gatherings and get togethers are a great way for entire family to have a fun time together.
Here are a couple ideas that can help you to create those memories within your own family, regardless of whether you have young children in the family or not.
Picnics
A picnic is a great spring to fall activity, and even those that have difficulty getting around can enjoy one. You don’t need to go out into the wilderness to have a quality picnic, either. At the home my grandma lives in, there is a small grilling area outside that’s perfect for a family get together. We often have four generations of the family together there, eating and celebrating special occasions. The warm early portion of fall is one of the best times to spend a couple hours in this setting.
Sports
If you’re able to help your elderly loved one get out of the house and to a professional sports game, this can be a big event for them–and yourself. But it doesn’t necessarily need to be a pro sporting event for the family to have a good time together. Even a family pickup game of kickball can be an incredibly enjoyable experience. There’s a reason why sports and games are such a big part of people’s lives–they are fun. So if you have an active family, something like this can be a great way to spend a few minutes together enjoying yourselves. Some can participate, some can watch. Either way, it’s a lot of fun.
Meals
If your older parent or grandparent has difficulty getting out of the house or is receiving in-home care, meeting up at their home for a big family meal can be a good family activity. The days might be past where they would spend hours putting together a big meal for you, but you can certainly do just that as a family. There are many variations of this, and each family is a little bit different, so feel free to put your own unique touch on the big family meal. It doesn’t even need to be connected with a holiday, if everyone’s schedules make it easier.
