A Promising Development in Fight Against Alzheimer’s

As you probably know, the details about how Alzheimer’s disease begins are still unknown. Researchers have discovered quite a bit about the disease and how it works, but the exact cause of the disease remains a mystery. New developments still occur frequently in the fight against dementia, however. Recently, researchers found that a gene called TREM-2 has been linked to the development of Alzheimer’s. This gene is a triggering receptor associated with myeloid cells, and in rare mutations of the gene, there is an elevated risk of developing the disease.

It is hoped that by targeting this gene with therapeutic methods that there may be a way to prevent or slow Alzheimer’s down. Obviously there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done here, but it is an encouraging development in the fight against dementia. The gene has also shown links to other diseases, such as Parkinson’s, Nasu-Hakola disease, and frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Again, this is a small step forward, but there’s potential for it to be much bigger if more progress is shown on this front.

Scientists do know some things that you and your family can do to help prevent or slow down the spread of Alzheimer’s. Things like exercise, a healthy diet, and staying mentally active have been shown to have positive results in this area. If you are not already doing these things and encouraging your family to do the same, one proactive step that you can take today is to move toward a lifestyle where these things are emphasized. Even small amounts of exercise can benefit here, and it can do so much good in other areas of your life and health, too.

Having a loved one that suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or any other form of dementia, for that matter, is never easy. Developments made in research today might help your parent or grandparent live a higher quality of life, but they might not. These developments have more potential to help people ten or more years down the road. Unfortunately for now, there is still no cure for the disease. The best that can be done is to manage and control the symptoms of dementia. With that said, having a strong caregiver service on your side is a must. You want someone who understands how the disease impacts people so that they will be compassionate, but you also want someone who has been professionally trained in the event of an emergency. Hopefully nothing like this ever happens while your mom or dad is receiving care, but if it does, you want someone on your side that knows what to do.
