For some of our readers, this story will not be a surprise at all. For others, it might seem a little odd. Before I go into any details on the study being referred to, it’s important that we keep in mind that mental health is a big part of senior care. If mental health is addressed as a matter of course, it has a drastic positive impact on the quality of life of those receiving senior care, no matter what their unique set of needs might be.
There is a stigma associated with being a person with a disability. People who have trouble getting around have special parking spots, they are often noticeably different from a physical perspective, and society often treats them a bit differently than they do people without disabilities. The weight of this stigma can be heavy.
It comes as no surprise, then, that those who take pride in their disability tend to be a little happier. Happiness has been linked with a higher perceived quality of life, which in the end allows for a better senior care experience. Having a loved one that needs in-home care is never easy, but if they are depressed because of their declining health, it makes it that much harder to make sure that good care is given.
Surveys have indicated that there are a number of factors that influence whether someone will take pride in their disability or not. Some of these factors include income, whether the person believes that they are actually disabled or not, and whether they have directly felt the stigma of their disability. The biggest factor of all of these was self-identification. Those that readily identified themselves as a person with a disability tended to have more pride in their state of health than others did. In these instances, the quality of life that these individuals experienced had more upward potential because of this mental barrier being broken.
Having a loved one in need of senior care isn’t easy on families. There are a lot of things that need to be taken into consideration, and it places a good deal of stress on those involved in the decision making and those around them. At Paradise In-Home Care, we do our best to take the stress out of the process for you. This is never an easy part of people’s lives. By making the transition into in-home care as seamless to the rest of your life as possible, our hope is that the quality of life for your loved one and everyone else in your family is improved. Care might only be needed for one person, but this is something that impacts everyone in the family. By doing our part to make care easier on everyone, there’s a better chance that some of the unhappiness that is often associated with declining health can be alleviated, making these years much more enjoyable for all of you.
We might not be able to take away your loved one’s disability or the needs that come along with it. But we can certainly make managing these things a lot easier.
